Dullin' it Down

Nip it down with Scotch Brite Pad and water

Secret Ingredient (Coke)

Battery Acid Old Harley Drain oil

Stirred, not shaken
Sponged On

In the oven at 200 Degrees (yes in the kitchen)

Take out and re-coat, let sit a few hours

Finished...maybe

I'm back on the 39 EL project...it's motor time!
I had to get the chrome stripped off the cam cover. It was then glass beaded...ugh! I needed it back to "old" so I got some tips from friends and started messing with it.
First I nipped it down with a Scotch Brite pad to get some of that hideous sheen off it. I then mixed up a batch of potion consisting of Old used 50W motor oil, Battery Acid and Coca Cola. I sponged the concoction onto the cover nice and thick. I preheated the oven to about 200 degrees and baked the cover for about a half hour. Yes I did this in my kitchen. No live-in women here to stop me from doing what seems perfectly logical!!! That next batch of chicken nuggets the boys cook will be interesting I'm sure...
I then removed it from the oven and re-coated it and let it sit for a couple of hours. It came out much better but I think it needs a bit more treatment...more coca-cola maybe...more time in the oven...who knows?

MOORHEAD DRUGS!!!!!

Besides the name of the business being two things you shouldn't live without...this Servi-Car fender has a strange tail. I've had it in the attic for a couple of decades and just decided it was "suitable for hanging", so I gave it a place of honor.
I bought this fender 20 (maybe more) years ago from my friend Motorcycle Mike in New Jersey, he bought it at a swap meet in Florida. I took it to Pennsylvania. While walking through a back field in Wauseon Ohio many years later (in 2004) I stumbled across this partial Servi-Car box bolted onto a later Servi. The guy that owned it told me it came off a Servi-Car that was used at a drug store in North Carolina. He was from Virginia. I never did get his number. Oh well, maybe I'll run across it again some time. And then there's always the other fender...
What are the chances??
This kinda shit happens to me everyday...that sounds familiar....

The George Miller Collection

George Miller has been around the New Jersey motorcycle scene since the 40's. I see him at AMCA meets in the area all the time. He is a wealth of knowledge and his memory of the distant past is sharp as a tack. He has a great collection of photos from the 40's and 50's from in and around New Jersey...mostly racing. I have scanned some and will post them from time to time.
The bikes in the above picture have some cool accessories... Roll up windshield, spot lights, etc. One of the more interesting are the shocks on the springer front ends. From what I have noticed, these seem to be a Jersey thing. I know they were sold at B&D's in Rahway NJ back then.
I have one side (shock) that I got on a springer I bought years ago.
The picture is pretty good quality and you can get into the detail....more to come!

My oldest in 1990 leaning on what I brought home from Brookfield NY that August. He still has that same look on his face! I think he just took a bite out of that front fender...

One Bad Dude...

You used to be able to sport an outfit like this... then The Village People messed it up for everybody!

Bad Blue Knuckle

Here's a very poorly colorized picture. Looks like a Magic Marker job! But it's a great old shot.

50 FL Thoro Shift...with a strange twist!

I went to a Local Bike Show/Car Show/ Swap Meet yesterday. While riding over on my 47 FL, I rode up behind a 50 Pan. I have seen this original green paint pan before at various meets and met the owner last year. The interesting thing about this pan is the cool Thoro Shifter that the original owner had installed to convert it to foot shift. I have a Thoro on my 47 U and it is cool as shit!
The even more interesting thing about this 50 FL is that it is 5 fucking serial numbers apart from a 1950 FL that I own!!!! Both bikes spent the last 60 years in the same general area in Eastern PA. The even, even more interesting thing is that mine has a B&H foot shift conversion installed on it!
Recap...
Both 1950 FL's, 5 serial numbers apart, sold in Eastern PA (maybe from the same dealer), both converted to each type of foot shift conversion available at the time, and both currently with owners that live about 5 miles apart!!!! DAMN!!!!
How did I find out about the numbers?
I just happened to get a weird feeling last year when I first saw the bike at Jefferson PA and looked at the numbers on this 1950. They seemed awfully close to mine so when I got home I rechecked my motor and holy shit 5 apart!

This kinda shit happens to me every day!

Holy Day

Scrap Drive on the Jersey Side 2010

Picked up some parts including a really sweet B&H

Mel's Ride

Joe Oz Indian

Farm Implements

I never thought I'd see the day that a 72 Impala would catch my eye. This was a real Cream Puff!

Goofiness

Richie's Pan

I was back in Jersey today for the third annual "Scrap Drive" in Jackson NJ. It was a good old fashioned swap meet. Folks selling out of pick ups and car trunks. I found some cool stuff at reasonable prices. There were more old cars then bikes, but I like to look at all that shit. The AMVETs bar was opened for biz and there was a band playing. The weather was perfect!
What more could you ask for?
