How to Chop a Panhead (and Flathead) March 1954!
These instructions are dated March of 1954 and is the earliest reference I have found using the term "Choppers". In this case it is used to describe the people doing the "chopping". This is possibly the coolest thing I've seen!
March 1954 Cycle Magazine reprinted in the Hudson Valley News Letter "Rusty Rides".
The letter from Jim McCauly (who I have met and is a good friend and mentor to my friend Dan Henke) is also priceless and uses the term Chopped cycles...
