My old dependable '46 Knuckle was not starting as easily as usual...it seemed to require a couple of extra prime kicks to get going...I ignored it for a while and then on Saturday I decided to see what was up, expecting maybe a clogged fuel strainer. I popped off the air cleaner cover and...Oh Shit! No wonder the M-74B wasn't sucking gas on the choke kicks...now the real question...were did the fuckin' parts go???
On the left, the choke disc I just pulled outta my carb and on the right is what it should look like...there's a lot missing...the steel disc, the steel spring and the brass pin...all MIA!
I took a peak down the throat and saw nothing unusual clear back into the intake manifold...
Now I'm sure there couldn't be anything in there since I put about 50 miles on the bike just the night before...BUT just to ease my mind I decided to do a little exploratory...My telescoping magnet broke long ago so I whipped this up out of a coat hanger and part of refrigerator magnet.
Wait a minute! Holy shit! From deep in the front intake chamber!!! WTF!
How the fuck???
Well I guess I gotta go deeper...
Off with the Linkert...
Hhhmmm... preformed a digital probe and didn't feel anything...
In with the magnet...what in the hell!!!
Are you Fuckin' Shittin' me??? WTF!
The steel disc...just floating around the intake valve area waiting for an opportunity to wreak havoc! OK now the intake has to come off so I can search for the brass pin...
Hhhhmmmm...not in there...
Not in there...
Well the brass pin is nowhere to be found...could it have dissolved from the heat and blown out the exhaust without hurting anything??? Could it be the one part out of the three that actually did fall into the air cleaner and out of one of the slots in the air cleaner backing plate??? I guess I'll never know...WTF!
She's all back together and running sweet! Sucking fuel like a champ on prime kicks...I put another 100 "trouble free" miles on it over the weekend....all better....'til next time...
