57 Pan Belt Buster

Last night was a perfect night for a ride so I fired up the 57 "Ape hanger" Pan. I got about five miles from the house, about to hit a nice winding road, shifted into third and "POP"! The old HD Sturgis belt could not take it anymore. Luckily my youngest kid was within a few miles with my van. It was a quick scoop up and back to the shop.

  1. How do you like the belt drive compared to an original chain drive primary? I'm thinking of putting one on my Knuckle.

  2. Well, I'm a chain guy myself. I have the belt on the Pan because it was already there. It does seem smooth and works good when it doesn't break! I found a new belt at an HD dealer 400009-80 part number (give or take a 0) and costs $120. But I did get it installed Friday night and I was back on the road.
I do know a bunch of people that swear by the belt and put them on everything including restored knuckles... so there is a big following for them.
