1939 Knucklehead - Foot Clutch Pedal Assembly - Everything you wanted to know and more...

Start with a complete '39 clutch pedal assembly,
a partial and various spare parts...

Disassemble everything...Damn! Cracked bearing cover...

Clean off "over paint" (I just coined that term) and grime with MEK...This Bearing Cover came off the partial...

...until you achieve the desired finish...I like it...

OK,.. back to disassembling the complete one...

Off with the foot lever shaft nut, lock washer
and the two lever friction spring washers

Now the Friction Spring Washer Disc is removed
(a disc with a forked tab doing a 90 off the side)

Flip it and pull off the spring, pedal
(Foot Clutch Lever) and Bearing Cover...

Now the steel Friction Disc is removed...

and the Molded Friction washer is removed...

And finally the Bracket Friction Disc is removed
(which is anchored by the spring stud)

Now the parts are ready for MEK
cleaning and "over paint" removal

Out of the MEK and sprayed down with WD-40

...and the flip side

Spreading out the cleaned parts for inspection...

This steel friction disc is shot...

...as you can see the "tit" that holds it in the
pedal is worn down from running too loose...

...and the pedal face and notch took a bit of a
beating as a result...however it is serviceable...

This spare will do the trick! The "tit" is intact...

And here you have it...the 13 parts (actually 15 if you take the cover screw nut and washer apart) that make up the '39 Clutch Pedal assembly

Some closer ups...

Bracket, Pedal (Lever) and Bearing Cover

Nice view of the '36 - '39 Bearing cover hole
with shoulder for the un-threaded spring stud

Un-threaded spring stud...

Time to assemble all those cleaned parts....

Remember to put the bearing cover on the pedal prior to assembly

A lot of the parts I used had nice original
plating / finish under the black "over paint"

Lock tab locked...cover screw, lock washer and nut

Assembly complete!

Installed on the frame...

Close up...

Hhhmmm...something ain't right with that spring!
1939 took a fixed hook on one side and eyelet on the other!
If I'm gonna do it, I may as well go all the way!!!

And I found one...(on the left)
Compared to the later one...

Another view...

There she is...a complete correct 1939 foot clutch assembly...
But wait something is missing...

There we go!

Well, if pictures are worth 1000 words...here's 36,000 words worth! Plus some extra words to fill in the blanks...
I'm getting a few things done on the '39 with the one arm immobilized...it takes all day but what else do I have to do? I can only watch so much CNN coverage of the Ferguson Riots...I've watched every MC related movie on Netflix and there's still several inches of frozen snow outside...

1939 Knucklehead - Shift Gate, Shift Lever and Knob

Used my old friend MEK to clean old
black paint off the 1939 only shift gate

...exposing what's left of the old worn original chrome

Dug up a pair of matching screws...

The shift lever pivot bracket was bent in slightly...
so I put an appropriate bolt in the vise and bent it out a hair...

Ready for install...

Installed gate...

Used an NOS shift lever stud...

...and there you go...topped off with a nice red knob...

1939 Knucklehead... Back on the Radar...

Sorting out and gathering parts

As I go stir crazy, I figured I may as well make a list and gather up the parts to complete my Red and Silver 1939 Knucklehead...This thing has been on the back burner too long! I can't do much single-handedly but I'll get what I can ready for when I'm outta this sling.
