The Greasy Knuckle Buster Blues...
My old blue "Dirty Nine" had no compression in the rear cylinder and has been sitting since last spring. So today I decided to take a break from my other projects and tear into it. I disconnected the usual stuff and yanked off the head. I thought maybe the rings were shot...Well as you can see my rear exhaust valve is totally fucked...decision time. Do I fix just the rear exhaust valve and slap it back together...or...do I yank the front head and both cylinders and freshen the top end...or ...NO, NOT THAT...rebuild the whole motor???
Ain't no aid like a Band-Aid!! Good compression on the front cylinder? If it ain't broke DON'T fix it !! It's springtime finally man. Take the other bikes on the long haul and save these big decisions for when the cold weather hits.

ReplyDeleteWell, my strategy with the "Dirty Nine" from day one was fix what's broke and nothing else. That has worked for 23 or so years. Although when I got her, this very valve was stuck. I sprayed it with CRC and kicked it til it freed up. I ran it for 10 years and then this very valve spring broke. I put a used valve spring in and ran it for 13 more years and now this...so i'm gonna fix the valve and run it for 16 more years...oh and I may check the intake valve while it's off...
